The Science

What each ingredient actually does.

Every dose on our label is itemized. Tap one to see what it does, and the research behind it.

L-Theanine is an amino acid found naturally in tea leaves. It supports a calm, relaxed mental state without sedation. That's why it pairs with our herbal blend instead of standing in for one.

The Research

A 2019 randomized, placebo-controlled trial gave 30 adults 200mg of L-theanine daily, the same dose used here, for four weeks. Sleep quality scores improved significantly compared to placebo, along with sleep latency and next-day functioning.

Hidese et al., Nutrients, 2019

Magnesium supports normal muscle and nervous system function, but the form matters. Many supplements use magnesium oxide, the cheapest form to produce, which the body absorbs poorly and which commonly causes stomach upset and diarrhea at effective doses. We use magnesium glycinate. It's absorbed through a different pathway, alongside the amino acid glycine, and is well tolerated even at doses that would upset the stomach in oxide form.

The Research

A widely-cited bioavailability study found the body absorbs only about 4% of magnesium oxide, versus several times more for better-absorbed forms. Poor absorption is what drives oxide's laxative reputation: the unabsorbed majority stays in the gut and pulls in water.

The Research (Glycinate + Sleep)

A 2025 randomized, placebo-controlled trial found magnesium glycinate improved insomnia severity scores compared to placebo over four weeks, with no increase in GI side effects.

A well-studied herb, traditionally used to ease the transition into sleep.

The Research

The largest analysis of valerian research pooled 16 clinical trials and over 1,000 participants, and found it improved subjective sleep quality overall, with a favorable safety record and no serious adverse events reported.

Bent et al., American Journal of Medicine, 2006

Often paired with valerian. Traditionally used to support a calm, settled evening.

The Research

A randomized, placebo-controlled trial in 184 adults with mild insomnia found a valerian-hops combination improved sleep compared to placebo, with a safety profile similar to placebo.

Morin et al., Sleep, 2005

Traditionally used to quiet a busy mind and ease occasional restlessness.

The Research

Passionflower has a long history as a calming herb. In a clinical trial, adults who drank passionflower tea reported better sleep quality than those drinking a placebo tea.

Ngan & Conduit, Phytotherapy Research, 2011

Traditionally used to support relaxation in the nervous system.

The Research

Skullcap has centuries of traditional use as a calming herb. Human clinical research is still emerging: a 2014 trial using a larger daily dose found it significantly improved overall mood over two weeks.

Brock et al., Phytotherapy Research, 2014

A gentle botanical, unrelated to opium poppy despite the name. Traditionally used to support relaxation.

The Research

California poppy's calming reputation comes from centuries of traditional use for rest and relaxation. Modern research is still catching up, with early studies combining it with other calming herbs showing encouraging results.

Why we skip melatonin

Real rest. No sedation.

Most sleep aids lean on melatonin. We don't, because independent lab testing has repeatedly found a gap between what's on melatonin labels and what's actually in the bottle. Most commercial doses also run well above the range research shows is effective for sleep onset.

Instead, the Sleep Pack uses theanine, magnesium glycinate, and a five-herb blend, at doses that support rest without sedation or morning grogginess.

Tested melatonin supplements contained a different amount than labeled, ranging from 74% to 247% of the stated dose.
